Singapore Basketball Centre, Thursday, March 10, 2011 — Woodgrove Secondary saw off the challenge of Deyi Secondary 56-46 to win the North Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship. Woodgrove led 34-25 at half-time.

Woodgrove captain Tok Hui Min (#11) contributed a game-high 30 points to drive her team to the title victory.

Woodgrove went unbeaten in their North Zone championship run and now have a 8-0 win-loss record for the year.

“Top 8 is our goal,” said captain Tok Hui Min about the upcoming national championship. “SCGS, RGS and Unity are teams to look out for. We haven’t met Christ Church. They are quite strong too.”

For Deyi, they had to battle a more uncertain road to the final. They finished second to Christ Church in their first round group and in the second round, found themselves in a three-way tie for second with Naval Base Secondary and Yishun Town Secondary behind Woodgrove with identical 1-2 win-loss records. Deyi qualified for the semi-finals with a better points differential.

In the semi-finals, they came up against Christ Church, whom they had lost to 48-55 in the first round. However, Deyi wrote a new chapter with a better ending for themselves in the semi-final when they beat Christ Church 56-53 to win a place in the final.

“We are proud to make the final for the first time,” said Deyi captain Yeo Kai Lin. “This is the second time we are in the nationals.”

“Our fighting spirit brought us here,” added Deyi vice-captain Lim Li Xin, who is also a national under-15 player.

Deyi started their basketball programme only in 2008 and now have a 5-4 win-loss record heading into the nationals.

Christ Church finished third with a 57-45 victory over Compassvale Secondary in the 3rd/4th placing match.
