Republic Polytechnic, Wednesday, March 3, 2011 — Anderson Secondary beat North Vista Secondary 22-16 to secure their spot in the final of the North Zone B Division Netball Championship.

Their victory came after they endured a slow start to the game. The first quarter saw Anderson struggle to impose their presence on court and they trailed North Vista 4-7.

However, the second quarter was a different story. Anderson restricted North Vista to just one goal with their 1.73 metres tall Goal Keeper, Sindhu, playing a crucial role.

The agile Sindhu rebuffed North Vista’s attempts to get the ball to their goal shooters. She also showed a good reading of North Vista’s attacking moves to consistently disrupt their flow of play.

On the other end, Anderson scored six themselves as they closed the first half 10-8 up.

With a place in the North Zone final at stake, Anderson found a determined North Vista after half-time. Anderson’s shooters were restricted by the North Vista defence to three goals in the early minutes of the third quarter.

And with North Vista’s shooters netting five goals, Anderson found North Vista tying the game at 13-13 in the midst of the third quarter.

However, Anderson finally broke North Vista’s resistance. With three more goals, and aided by their opponents’ sloppy passes, Anderson entered the final quarter with a 16-13 advantage.

In the final quarter, a tight defence and a patient attacking line allowed Anderson to go through to the final as 22-16 winners.

Anderson’s coach, Rebecca, said after the game: “It was a good game played. The Goal Keeper was outstanding. However, our shooters could have been better.”

In the other North Zone semi-final, the Singapore Sports School thrashed CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School 41-10 to set up a final with Anderson.

In the earlier rounds, Anderson Secondary had lost to the Singapore Sports School by eight goals.

Giving her assessment of her team’s chances in the final, Rebecca said: “It will be a 50-50 game. The girls are looking good. They have yet to peak in their performance. However, the shooters need to have better mental strength in order to overcome their opponents.”
