Republic Polytechnic, Thursday, February 24, 2011 — Singapore fencers swept all medals on offer in the women’s foil event on the first day of the Cadet World Cup. Liane Wong, Singapore’s 2010 Youth Olympic Games representative, breezed through the preliminary rounds but had to display her big match experience in overcoming her national teammates in the latter rounds.

An overjoyed Liane said, after beating her club teammate Lynn Yeo in the final: “This victory means a lot to me after suffering an ankle injury early in the fencing season, so to come back with this win especially with so many strong competitors gives me a lot of confidence for the long season ahead.”

Thalia Lee and Lim Qi Hui took the bronzes.

Fencing Singapore’s President Nicholas Fang enthused about the good showing of the Women’s Foil fencers.

“The results clearly shows the strong development pipeline the team has in place and hopefully put us in good stead as we strive for medal winning performances in future major games.”

In other results of the day, Hong Kong fencers showed their strong depth in Men’s Epee and Sabre events, by winning all but one medal, with Malaysian representative, Wong Tzer Chyuan winning the bronze medal in the men’s Sabre event.

Defending champion Clive Leu of Singapore unfortunately was not able produce his best form and did not qualify for the latter rounds.

The Cadet World Cup is into its second year at Republic Polytechnic from February 24-27. The competition was created last year as a precursor to the Youth Olympics which were held in Singapore in August, 2010. Last year’s event saw 111 participants.

The CWC 2011 sees 185 talented fencers aged 17-and-under from Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, and host Singapore, competing in foil, epee and sabre as individuals and also teams.

The event has attracted some of the best young fencers from Singapore, including the country’s Youth Olympic representatives Liane Wong and Justin Ong, who will be flying the flag in the women’s and men’s foil events respectively.
