Jalan Besar Stadium, Saturday, February 12, 2011 — The Young Lions opened their S.League season on a losing note when they went down 0-2 to the Singapore Armed Forces FC.

SAFFC scored with their first shot on goal in the 25th minute. A Taisuke Akiyoshi cross from the left found Fazrul Nawaz who beat Young Lions goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud with a header.

Mislav Karoglan then scored with an overhead kick in the 68th minute to ensure victory for SAFFC. The Young Lions only had one good chance which they fluffed.

“Debut goals are always good for strikers and I got two strikers scoring goals, that’s a good sign!” SAFFC head coach Richard Bok said on sleague.com.

The Young Lions did not have enough time to prepare for the game, according to Young Lions coach Robin Chitrakar.

“I felt a draw would be a fairer result,” the Young Lions coach told sleague.com.

“Our preparations prior (to this game) was quite tough, because some of the boys are involved in school games on Tuesday and Thursday. Thus there’s not much time to prepare them (for this game). But the boys competed and did their very best. We can match them (SAFFC), but we’ve got to have more belief in the final third especially. It’s a good learning experience playing against a stronger opponent,” he added.

The Young Lions team competing in this season’s S.League is expected to produce the bulk of players who will represent Singapore at this year’s SEA Games in November.
