Hua Yi Secondary, Monday, January 17, 2011 – Jurong Secondary posted their first win of the season as they beat Yuhua Secondary 2-0 (25-14, 25-9) in their first Group A match at the B Division Girls West Zone Volleyball Championship.

Jurong had a shaky start to the match as they saw Yuhua take off with the lead. Yuhua seemed to be giving Jurong a tough time as they stopped their opponents attack at the net. Jurong seemed to have trouble settling in, but eventually closed in at 9-9 after a return by Lim Ziqing (Jurong #8). However, Jurong saw Yuhua run off with the lead again, prompting for a timeout as they trailed 14-10.

Upon resumption, the tables turned as the sleeping giant was awoken. Jurong’s engines were started as they pounded Yuhua to quickly close the score gap. A powerful spike by Rachel Lau (Jurong #12) from the outside saw Jurong take the lead, and they never looked back after that. Jurong continued to hold Yuhua at the 14-point mark as they raced towards set point. Rachel played a key role in the front as she sent several spikes out of reach of Yuhua’s players. After a 14-point scoring streak, Jurong took the set after Yuhua deflected their serve out of bounds.

The second set saw Jurong continue their dominance. Ziqing (Jurong #8) took the first point after a spike down the line from the opposite corner. Yuhua could not find any answer to Jurong’s advances as they saw their opponent race ahead once again. Two time-outs at the 10-5 and the 19-9 marks provided no respite from Jurong as the latter brought themselves to 23-9. Yuhua #6’s drop shot attempt at the next rally unfortunately found the net, allowing Jurong to be at match point. Libing’s (Jurong #9) subsequent spike from the outside saw Yuhua unable to return, allowing the team to seal the set, and the match.
