Marina Reservoir, Tuesday, August 24, 2010 — Singapore’s Brandon Ooi has qualified for Round 4 of the men’s K1 Canoe Slalom in the Youth Olympic Games canoe-kayaking competition.

He defeated Iran’s Ali Aghamirzaeijenaghrad in a Round 3 race, clocking 1 minute 35.80 seconds to his opponent’s 1:43.21. That was the sixth quickest time of the round.

Earlier in the day, Brandon had clocked 1:33.49 in the time trial, and 1:35.24 in a Round 1 victory against Bulgaria’s Boris Nedyalkov, which gave him the bye into the third round.

Round 4 of this competition is essentially the quarter-final stage. Brandon will be part of four pairs of canoeists, which will be whittled down to two in Round 5. The winning pairs in this latter round will face off for the gold medal, while the remaining two pairs will contest the bronze.

Brandon’s compatriot Wang Nan Feng failed to make it past Round 3 in the women’s K1 Canoe Slalom, clocking a 1:51.87 to a 1:46.85 by Belgium’s Hermien Peters.

Nan Feng won her Round 1 race against Belarussian Aliaksandra Hryshyna, finishing in 1:47.23 to her opponent’s 1:58.30. Nan Feng’s time trial result was a 1:45.09, the eighth fastest.
