The image of an ethnically homogeneous German football team with names like Schmidt, Klinsmann and Muller is dated.

Did you know that 11 of the 23 in the German national football squad at the 2010 World Cup have a foreign background?

Mesut Oezil, who scored the winning goal in the 1-0 win over Ghana, is of Turkish descent. His German teammate Serdar Tacsi also has Turkish parents.

Up front, Germany have Brazilian-born Cacau who became a German citizen only in 2009.

The German team also has three Polish-born players — Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose and Piotr Trochowski — while Marko Marin was born in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Dennis Aogo has a Nigerian father, Jerome Boateng a Ghanian father and Sami Khedira a Tunisian father. All three were born in Germany.
