South Africa, Sunday, June 21, 2010 — A Luis Fabiano brace and a tap-in from Elano was enough to secure qualification to the second round as Brazil turned on the style to beat the men from Ivory Coast 3-1.

Luis Fabiano broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when he was put through on goal after a neat pass from Kaka. His finish was exquisite as he blasted home from six yards. Brazil’s lead was doubled just five minutes after the restart, with Fabiano getting on the score sheet again via a controversial goal. Fabiano was adjudged to have handled the ball, not once but twice during the build up but he expertly managed to beat two defenders in the process before firing home. It was not long before Brazil managed to score a third, Kaka squared the ball and albeit a deflection, the ball fell kindly to the onrushing Elano who slotted home easily.

However, after a moment of individual brilliance from Gervinho in which he ran the full length of the pitch after collecting the ball in his own half but after being tackled, he managed to lay the ball back to Yaya Toure who flighted in a ball that Didier Drogba duly headed home.

Then, the game was marred by Kaka’s dismissal after he received two yellow cards. The Brazilians especially Dunga, was furious with the tackles of some Ivory Coast players while frustration probably got the better of Kaka as he got into an altercation with Kader Keita. Even though Ivory Coast still continued to play tenaciously, the game was already settled by then.

Man of the Match: Luis Fabiano
The Brazil striker was barely noticeable against the North Koreans but his bullet-like finish in the 25th minute and despite handling the ball in his second goal, he was instrumental in securing Brazil’s victory.
