Old Police Academy, Wednesday, May 5, 2010 – Defending champions Raffles Institution (RI) beat Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) 17-8 while Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) edged St Andrew’s Junior College (SAJC) 8-3 in the semi-finals of the A Division Rugby Championship.

RI scored early in the second minute with a penalty for a 3-0 lead. ACJC came right back but failed to punish RI when they mised two penalties.

RI then had a drop-kick that came back off the bar to the relief of the ACJC supporters but then left the back door open when they allowed RI to score a try on the blind side to lead 10-0.

ACJC finally got on the scoreboard with a penalty on the last play of the half to trail 3-10 going into the break.

RI pressure continued unabated in the second half and their forwards broke through for another easy try in the 34th minute to go up 17-3.

ACJC answered just four minutes later when they caught the RI left winger was caught napping and was beaten to the ball in the try area after a long punt to the far end of the RI backline. The ACJC conversion came back off the post to leave them trailing 8-17.

ACJC were still in it but in the 43rd minute, they missed their third penalty of the game. A drive to the RI 22m line then gave ACJC good field position but they could not capitalise. A dropped ACJC catch with four minutes to go allowed RI to camp in the ACJC half to allow them to finish off the game 17-8 victors.

In the other semi-final, ACS(I) beat SAJC 8-3 in a scrappy game. SAJC scored first with a penalty in the 18th minute to go 3-0 up before the game got bogged down in the middle of the park.

ACS(I) finally made a breakthrough in the 24th minute when their winger went over for a try down the right flank to give his team a 5-3 lead.

A dour second half was finally lifted by an ACS(I) penalty that just cleared the post in the 48th minute to make it 8-3.

SAJC finished the game strongly and they finished with a sweeping move down the back line that almost yielded a try but ACS(I) hung on for the win.

The final between ACS(I) and RI will be played on Wednesday, May 12th, at the Old Police Academy.
