Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 31, 2010 - Jurong West Secondary posted a 62-21 victory over Nan Chiau High in the group stages of the National B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

This resounding victory proved to be doubly sweet for Jurong West, as they were defeated narrowly by Zhonghua Secondary in their previous match.

The game started off rather slowly, with both sides failing to register any baskets for the first couple of minutes. However, Jurong West eventually opened the scoring in quick succession to pull away from their opponents.

Jurong West were evidently the better side throughout the match, exhibiting impressive organisation and spirited attempts to intercept the ball. Nan Chiau were largely unable to penetrate the solid Jurong West defence and trailed 2-17 at the end of the first quarter.

Jurong West continued to dominate the game in the second quarter, outscoring Nan Chiau by five baskets to bring the scoreline to 29-9 at the half.

In the third quarter, Jurong West maximised their height advantage to intercept the passes of the smaller Nan Chiau players and interrupt their momentum. They finished the quarter with a lead of 40-16.

Nan Chiau fought back in the last quarter of the game, scoring two baskets in quick succession. However, this proved to be of no avail as Jurong West eventually pulled away, with Lee Qiuhui (#5) and Keong Sing Ling (#9) scoring spectacular three-pointers on their way to a 62-21 victory.

Jurong West’s teacher-in-charge, Joe So, was pleased with his side’s performance, but remained cautious and focused on the matches to come. “We bounced back well after our defeat by Zhonghua. However, my team will now be focused on preparing for our next match against Dunman,” he said.

Jurong West now have the difficult task of playing unbeaten group leaders Dunman Secondary who had big wins against Zhonghua (62-25) and Nan Chiau High (75-29).

Their rival for second place is Zhonghua, who have a final game against Nan Chiau.

Both the final group games are scheduled for Monday, April 5th, at Clementi Sports Hall. Game time is 4pm.
