Jalan Besar Stadium, Monday, March 29, 2010 – The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) plans to introduce a promotion and relegation component to the S.League, Singapore’s only professional sports league.

The FAS will introduce it after it revamps the National Football League (NFL), the second highest tier of football in Singapore, in 2011.

“FAS will revamp the NFL format in 2011. It is envisaged that the NFL will be the platform for our local players to hone their skills by being given the opportunity to play regular quality competitive matches as part of the player’s pathway and for local coaches to be able to gain valuable coaching experience as part of the coaches’ pathway,” said FAS president Zainudin Nordin.

“FAS also intend to expand the capacities and capabilities of the NFL clubs, as it helps them prepare for the proposed promotion/relegation to the S.League, which is in line with one of the goals in our FAS Strategic Plan,” added the president.

Clubs will have to meet a new NFL Club Licensing Criteria the FAS is planning to introduce for participation in the 2011 season and beyond.

The FAS will provide more details as part of their strategic plan on April 7th, 2010.
