Delta Sports Hall, March 10, 2010 – The undefeated Singapore Chinese Girls' School (SCGS) crushed Raffles Girls' School (RGS) 76-39 to clinch the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

SCGS finished fourth last year after losing to RGS in the 3rd/4th placing match, but there was no doubt about the result today as they led from the first quarter to give their opponents no chance in the match. Alanna Lim (SCGS #10) starred for her team with a game-high 24 points and was duly named the Most Valuable Player (MVP).

There was no stopping SGCS from the tip-off as they harassed their opponents for every ball and forced them into careless and uncharacteristic turnovers. The first quarter belonged to Gladys Molino and Alanna Lim as they made all the baskets for their team.

Although RGS were able to take a brief lead at 6-5 with four minutes left in the first qurater, it only sparked SCGS to go on a 12-0 run with Gladys scoring seven points including a three-pointer to give her side a 17-6 lead at the end of the quarter.

SCGS continued their onslaught in the second and third quarters as the off-colour RGS struggled to make an impact on the game. Solid defending by SCGS prevented their opponents from making easy shots, while at the other end, points were coming freely with Alanna and Gladys hitting three-pointers, giving SCGS a 33-16 lead at half-time before ending the match as a contest in the third quarter with an insurmountable 53-29 lead.

Much of the same followed in the final quarter as SCGS extended their massive lead, claiming the quarter by a 23-10 score-line and winning the match with the largest lead of the game at 76-39.

"Our efforts during training have paid off!" said a happy Lim Yu-Han, SCGS captain. "Everyone work well together and everyone wanted to win. We expected it to be very close, but we had a good start and we led them by quite a few points in the first quarter. It was good that we started off well and I think that helped us win the match."

"There were a lot intercepts and the defense was extremely focused, but take nothing away from the offense which was good as well.”

On their national championship hopes and aspirations, she said, "We are aiming to be champions, but we will take it step by step, round by round."

Alanna Lim was crowned MVP and she shared how she felt: "Although I scored 24 points, I think I can do better than that. I am also quite surprise that I won [the
MVP award]! I thought my team-mate Gladys Molino will win as she had quite a lot of points as well as assists and steals while I was quite lazy! But whatever it is, I owe it to the team."
