St Gabriel’s thrash Queensway 6-0 in C Division football

Balestier Hill Secondary School, Tuesday, March 9, 2010 - St Gabriel’s Secondary School recorded a 6-0 win over Group B rivals Queensway Secondary School in a C Division Football Championship first round match.

St Gabriel’s took an early lead through Navin Manogaran (#3) in the sixth minute. Eight minutes later, St Gabriel’s doubled their advantage through Mohammed Ilham (#10) from a well-delivered corner. The score remained 2-0 at the half-time interval.

Timothy Theodore Kumar (#9) then scored another goal from a corner in the 44th minute to make it 3-0, before Athanasios Alexander (#13) extended the lead further in the 56th minute.

Navin scored his second goal of the game in the 58th minute for his team’s fifth, before Saswan Bin Salem hammered the final nail in the coffin in style a minute later when he struck home a spectacular shot from outside the penalty box.

Queensway’s captain, Bryan, said that they only had a 50% chance of going through to the next round. When asked about how the team played, the Queensway skipper added that they played poorly, the team did not get into challenges and there was no chemistry between the players.

William Bernard, the St Gabriel’s captain, said that his team still had a shot at qualifying even though the chance was slim, and that they were confident about their next game against Fairfield Methodist School. That game will be played at First Toa Payoh Secondary School on March 11 at 1500hrs.
