Laos, Monday, December 14, 2009 – Team Singapore’s swimmers capped off an excellent performance at the pool with another two more golds on the final day of the swimming programme, part of a four-gold haul on the sixth day of the 25th South East Asian (SEA) Games.

Amanda Lim, the women’s 50 metres Freestyle national record holder but for so long over-shadowed by the exploits of fellow teammate and freestyle specialist Quah Ting Wen, edged out the latter in the sprint freestyle final. She clocked 25.82 seconds to Ting Wen’s 25.88s for the gold, with both going under Joscelin Yeo’s 2005 Games mark.

Tao Li then won her fifth gold of the Games – her fourth individual win – in the womens’ 200m Butterfly, bettering her own Games mark with her 2:13.49s finish.

The much-heralded Ting Wen swam her 13th race of the Games in the women’s 400m Individual Medley, and much was made of her rivalry with Malaysian Siow Yi Ting after the two locked horns in a memorable battle in the previous Games, where Ting Wen won by only 0.21 seconds.

But Thai Natthanan Junkrajang mis-read the script, and stole the gold after Yi Ting’s poor Backstroke leg, Ting Wen’s slow Breaststroke time, and a fast-tiring team mate in the final Freestyle finish. Ting Wen had to settle for silver after clawing back the deficit from her breaststroke leg which left her trailing team mate Koh Hui Yu at one stage. Hui Yu took the bronze in a new personal best.

The men’s 4x100m Medley relay team, looking to make a clean sweep of all six relays at the Games, had to make do with five when the Indonesians swam a dominant race to win handily. The Singapore quartet of Rainer Ng, Ng Jia Hao, Clement Lim and Russell Ong, though, held off the challenge of a strong Philippine lineup to clinch silver in a new national record of 3:44.15s which bettered the old mark by more than four seconds.

Joshua Lim won his second individual bronze medal of the Games with his 1:51.76s time in the mens’ 200m Freestyle, which was a personal best. In fact, of the squad’s 21 swimmers who participated in individual events, 14 clocked best times. In all, Team Singapore swimmers chalked up 23 personal bests, 13 National records and 12 SEA Games records, all of which translated into an awesome medal tally of 14 golds, 8 silvers and 11 bronzes from the pool itself.

Shooting, which has produced golds on a consistent basis these Games, added another today in the men’s 50 metres Pistol Team final. Poh Lip Meng, Gai Bin and Nigel Lim finished 28 points ahead of the Vietnamese to win gold, and Gai picked up a silver in the individual event.

Yu Mengyu and Sun Bei Bei won the women’s doubles gold in an all-Singaporean affair, as Wang Yuegu and Feng Tianwei claimed the silver. Also coming in second was golfer Johnson Poh after four rounds of play. His strong showing helped his team of Jonathan Woo, Jonathan Leong and Lam Zhiqun to the silver as well in the team event.

In other events, Dinniyati Juraimi qualified for the women’s Class B final in Pencak Silat, but the footballers did not manage to get that far, crashing out 4-1 at the semi-final stage to Vietnam. They will play hosts Laos in the bronze medal match on Thursday, December 17.

Team Singapore’s medal tally after six days of competition stands at 28 golds, 19 silvers and 29 bronzes, and are at an impressive third place in the standings.
