A long-time observer of Singapore football, Dez Corkhill, shares his take on the state of Singapore football. He believes that the lack of support from the mainstream media has retarded the development of football in Singapore.

“The biggest issue I see – and I work in the media – is that the S.League has no visibility. The local papers will report, not on a match from the previous night, if it’s a humdinger, they will preview [an upcoming game], for whatever commercial reasons. It’s wrong. It needs to be changed.

“It needs television profile. The only television profile it gets is the Friday night game on MediaCorp. It needs more…. It’s up to the local media. It’s up to the Straits Times. It’s up to MediaCorp. It’s up to SingTel. It’s up to StarHub. It’s up to the FAS to create a package that will enable content to be delivered to these guys. And that content can be good,” said Dez.

He also observed that the introduction of Brunei DPMM FC has energised the league, its troubles with FIFA notwithstanding, giving local fans something to talk about.
