Gombak Stadium, Sunday, 11 October, 2009 – The National University of Singapore (NUS) lead the men’s and women’s categories with 118 points and 69 points respectively at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Championships.

Nanyang Polytechnic, on 51 points, are a staggering 67 points behind in second place. Critically, seven NUS athletes are champions in their events while the other teams combine for only three individual champions.

The NUS women’s team has a closer fight on their hands with the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) just 22 points behind on 47 and the Singapore Management University (SMU) a further 6 points adrift on 41 with many points still to be gained on the second and final day of competition on Sunday, 18 October.

Amanda Choo of NTU, the holder of the women’s 100m national record, was a standout athlete on the opening day of competition.

Her first job of the day at 2.45pm was to qualify for the final of the women’s 100m and that she did comfortably with the leading time of 12.68 seconds.

At 4.15pm, she trooped over to the field to contest the shot put final in which she finished a respectable seventh position with her effort of 7.80m (who knew our women’s 100m record holder could throw too?).

Then fifty minutes later at 5.05pm, she dug her spikes into the starting blocks for the 100m final.

In a workman-like manner, Amanda sprinted away from the field in the opening half of the sprint and though team-mate Ann Siao Mei looked like she was closing in on her in the last 20m, Amanda had done enough to run through the finish line in 12.35s for the win. Her time was just 0.02s off her championship record set in 2007.

She was not done still. One-and-a-quarter hour later, she returned to the track, with Shalom Danielle See, Ann Siao Mei and Ng Yu Jun, to help the NTU women’s 4x100m relay team to qualify for the final in a time of 50.93s.

It was nearly 6.30pm by then, the end of a good afternoon’s work for Amanda Choo. She had retained her 100m title, contributed two extra points to NTU in the shot put, an event the varsity had no other competitor for, and put in a strong leg in the 4x100m relay for the fastest qualifying time.
