Gombak Stadium, Sunday, October 11, 2009 – A hot afternoon of competition did not deter athletes from putting up championship record-breaking performances at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Track-and-Field Championships. A total of five records were broken in the men’s and women’s triple jump, women’s shot put, men’s javelin throw and men’s 10,000 metres.

In the women’s triple jump, Wong Kit Fei of the National University of Singapore (NUS) hopped, stepped and jumped to a mark of 11.48m. The effort is 0.06m further than the previous championship record set in 2002 by Pan Peiting of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and was recorded against a wind measurement of -0.4 m/s.

Wong won the gold medal over Xu Weixin of the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) who was the only other person who managed to record a distance over 10 metres with her mark of 10.55m. In third was Chong Yi Mei of the Singapore Management University (SMU) who achieved 9.89m.

Lai Yong Hui of NUS matched his counterpart’s feat by also breaking the men’s triple jump championship record with a leap of 15.15m against a strong headwind of 2.3 m/s. He improved on the previous record set by Alvin Lin, also of NUS, in 2008 by 0.47m. Daryl Tan made it a 1-2 for NUS with his effort of 13.55m with Muhammad Firdaus Bin Juhari of SMU rounding up the podium just two centimetres shy of Daryl’s mark for the bronze medal.

In the women’s shot put, Wan Lay Chi of Nanyang Polytechnic improved on her championship record of 12.87m set in 2008 with a heave of 12.99m. Like the women’s triple jump, only one other athlete went over 10 metres and that was Teo Hui Juen of NUS who recorded a distance of 10.16m for the silver medal with Nur Iryani Binte Halip of NTU garnering the bronze with her effort of 8.59m.

Also improving on his own record was Akid Chong of Nanyang Polytechnic in the men’s javelin event. He improved on his 2008 mark of 58.69m by over a metre with his winning effort of 59.79m. Lee Yue Jer and Ong Jin Yang, both of NUS, bagged the silver and bronze medals with efforts of 55.01m and 49.05m respectively.

In the last individual event of the day before the 4x100m relay heats were to take place, Mok Ying Ren of NUS lowered his 10,000m personal record and with that, the championship record, by 24.91 seconds with a time of 33 minutes 32.90 seconds. Team-mate Aaron Meng followed him past the finish line over a minute after in a time of 34:58.79. In third was Ang Chee Yong of NTU in a time of 36:46.30.
