Press statement from the Football Association of Singapore
Singapore, Wednesday, September 30, 2009 – The Football Association of Singapore refers to the article on the FIFA website today about the decision of the FIFA Executive Committee to suspend the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (BAFA) and the subsequent status of Brunei DPMM FC's participation in the S.League.
The FAS has been informed officially by FIFA earlier this year of their approval for DPMM FC to compete in the S.League for the entire 2009 season.
Regarding this latest development, FAS has yet to receive any official note from FIFA. We have since written to FIFA on an urgent basis to seek clarification and further instructions.
The FAS will provide further updates once we have received a reply from FIFA.
N.B. Excerpt from the FIFA website:
“The Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (BAFA) was suspended due to government interference in its affairs, which started with a decision by the Brunei authorities to dissolve the BAFA and to replace it with a new association in December 2008. The suspension applies with immediate effect and means that Brunei club DPMM will no longer be permitted to play in the Singapore S-League. The suspension will run until the BAFA is reinstated by the government.”
I think DPMM is the best foreign team to have graced the S-League thus far. They are competitive and gave the local teams a run for their money.
Even before the season ended I know that they will leave a better legacy than Sporting Afrique and the match-fixing Chinese teams.
they didn’t have the luck of champions, but it would be a pity to see a up and coming team getting the boot from the league, if it’s confirmed that they get booted.
What a shame.. Brunei DPMM was quite a force to be reckoned with in the S.League. If not for the suspension of its players, I think they would be fighting SAFFC for the trophy right now…
