Siglap Secondary School, Wednesday, August 12, 2009 – The kick-off at a scorching hot time of 3pm did not deter Siglap Secondary School from beating Tampines Secondary School 1-0 in a girls’ C Division Football Championship game.

Siglap’s Atiqah (#13) and Namirah (#4) led the attack for their side, and they had the first attempt at goal early in the game but the Tampines keeper easily caught the light tap.

Unfazed, Atiqah tried again soon after, and this time her shot flew past the keeper’s outstretched arms to hit the net for a 1-0 Siglap lead.

A nice clearance by Tampines’ #13 stopped Siglap’s chance of a second goal, but the latter kept coming back with their repeated attempts. From the sidelines, their coach and teachers yelled on encouragement, and urged their players to take shots at goal, after seeing them twice dribbling close to the goal but not shooting at it.

The Siglap players camped in the Tampines penalty box, but their dribbles came to nothing as a sea of Tampines defenders swept over them.

Leading 1-0 going into the second half, Siglap dominated the possession with Tampines failing to muster any opportunities to level the match.

Siglap’s win brings them to sixth place out of nine teams in the table.

Fielding a team of entire Secondary One students, Mrs Shirley Goh, a teacher from the school, commented that most schools put their Secondary Twos into the B Division squad, leaving only the Secondary Ones for the C Division competition.
