CCAB, Friday, March 6, 2009 - Defending boys B Division volleyball champions St Hilda's Secondary School coasted to an easy 25-6, 25-16 win over Fairfield Methodist Secondary School in a Group C encounter today.

It was all St Hilda's from the get-go. Their opponents were not allowed to settle in as a raucous St Hilda’s crowd had plenty to cheer about. Middle spiker and team captain Benjamin Choo (#7) had a field day, attacking the net with relish and thundering countless spikes with aplomb against a hapless Fairfield Methodist front court defence.

The receiving, setting and spiking of St Hilda’s was immaculate to a T, as they chalked up easy points by executing the triumvirate of basic volleyball skills flawlessly. They raced to a quick 13-3 lead in the first set and reached set point when #11 Seng Whye pulled off two consecutive blocks on Fairfield spikes, the second of which could not be retrieved by them.

St Hilda’s carried on where they left off in the second set, scoring the first two points on a block by #3 Kevin and a quick attack which completely bemused the Fairfield defence. Fairfield had their first successful defence at the net as #15 and #8 combined to repel a St Hildan spike to pull within 15-8, but the tournament favourites closed out the game quickly. A powerful spike by #6 Haijing right into Fairfield's libero gave them a 23-14 lead, and though Fairfield managed to save two match points, St Hilda's #3 Kevin provided the exclamation point on the game with a hefty spike to conclude the match.

St Hilda will play their final Group C game on Tuesday, 10 March, against Xinmin Secondary, who also has won both their opening games.
