East Coast Park, Saturday, March 7, 2009 – Mok Ying Ren, 20, blazed home in a time of 56 minutes 7 seconds to win the open category at the Singapore Biathlon. 2,200 endurance junkies jumped into the waters off East Coast Park, including Chief of Defence Force Lt-Gen Desmond Kuek, Chief of Army Major-Gen Neo Kian Hong and Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Chew Men Leong.

Mok was followed by Lim Zhi Ming in 58:20 and Sikhander Singh in 58:30.

In the women’s open category, Trudy Fawcett, a British national and Singaporean permanent resident, successfully defended her title in a time of 1:07:14 while Singaporean Dinah Chan followed in second in 1:08:23. Lin Zhi Yin was third in 1:12:03.

“The swim was a bit weird,” said Mok Ying Ren as he waited in the winner’s tent to collect his prize. “We were overwhelmed by the waves. I was in the second wave and it looked confusing because the first wave wore red caps and the buoys were red too!”

“My aim was to stay comfortable in the swim. I’ve been doing a lot of running training because I’m trying to make the SEA Games track and field team in the 10,000m since there is no triathlon event in the SEA Games this year,” said Mok.

The qualifying time for the 10,000m is 31:33 and Mok is currently about two minutes outside the qualifying time.

“The run was very good because of the cool weather. I wanted to do a 3:30min/km pace and I managed that,” said Mok.

Chief of Defence Force, Lt-Gen Desmond Kuek, also took part in the event, finishing in a time of 1:43:14.

“The race was very good and the weather was excellent. I’m sure everyone enjoyed themselves,” he said after the prize-giving ceremony. © Red Sports
