Changi Beach Park, Sunday, October 12, 2008 – Over 250 endurance race enthusiasts took part in a quadrathlon last Sunday off Changi beach Park. The oddly-named Quadthlon 2008 – usually spelled quadrathlon – required athletes to swim 500m, inline skate 12km, cycle 10km and run 6km.

Most international quadrathlons incorporate kayaking and the World Quadrathlon Federation defines a full quadrathlon as a 3.2km swim, 20km kayak, 161km bike and a 42km run. The Singapore event is the first to have inline skating as one of the four disciplines.

Organised by SAFRA Tampines, about half of the participants were between the ages of 15 to 35.

The champion of the Men's Open category was Mr Pascal Aeschlimann a 35-year-old from Switzerland. He shared about his race experience: "I lost quite a fair bit of stamina during the swimming leg, but managed to catch up during the other legs. I think most participants experienced difficulty in the skating leg. But overall, it was a good race with a good combination of four disciplines."

The winners of the Youth Mixed Relay category were full-time national servicemen Mr Sim Yan Lian and Mr Benjamin Lan. The pair of 20-year-old champions said, "The event was well-planned and the skating element was definitely a refreshing addition compared to the usual triathlons we had participated in previously."
