MacRitchie Reservoir, Saturday, October 4, 2008 – Lexus Tan was the first to complete a 50km ultramarathon race in a time of 4 hours and 38 minutes last Saturday.

The North Face 100, the first off-road ultramarathon, was flagged off at the MacRitchie Reservoir last Saturday morning and was run over different terrain in the central catchment area of Singapore.

Lexus Tan and teammate Kek Hong Leong from team “F1 runners” were the winners in the men's section. They clocked a combined time of 9hrs 50min 16sec.

Tan and Kek will also represent Singapore in the final leg of the four-leg ultramarathon series, which will be held in Beijing, China, early next year.

“It was one of the toughest races I have ever participated in. The unpredictable terrain made it difficult for me to pace myself,” said Lexus Tan.

“I think the only reason why I managed to do well is because of my strict training regime of completing close to 80km in a week.”

Yeo Kim Hong and Yap Boon Keng finished in second place in a time of 10hr 1min 42sec. Third spot went to Robson Phan and Yong Chun Seng in 10hr 50min 48sec.

Swiss runner Katja Fimk was the first women to finish the race in 5hr 31min 17sec but was not placed amongst the winners as only prizes were given to runners competing in teams of two. The top honours in the women's section went to Lesley Tan and Yong Lai Chee. They completed the race in a combined time of 11hr 10min 18sec.

Chung Shui Ping and Leung Kwan Ni Wiwin finished in second place in a time of 11hr 41min 4sec. Chueng Tsui Ying and Colleen Koh finished third in 12hr 20min 1sec.

Said a participant in the triathlon family forum, scatman: “The most gruelling race I have ever entered. The terrain was incredible. I never knew Singapore had so may hills and so much rough terrain.”

There was a cut off time of 8 hours and one participant estimated that 50% of those who started failed to make it.

REDpoll

N.B. This poll runs continuously and may incorporate responses regarding the same event year after year. If the event was well organised one year and badly organised the next, hopefully the poll will reflect that. We intend to keep this poll running for as long as possible. New running events are also added as and when appropriate and so their lower votes will reflect that. Multiple answers possible.

The best races, based on logistics, number of participants and price, are:
