Two weeks into the zonal basketball championships, St Andrew’s are proving the surprise package of the South Zone Basketball Championship. Playing in Group D, St Andrew’s won their first two games of the season, thrashing Bishan Park 59-11 and Mayflower 37-5 before they lost their first game to Queenstown this afternoon 32-42. This was Queenstown’s third consecutive win and their game against Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road), who also have a 3-wins-0-losses record, on Monday, February 4, will determine who wins their Group to qualify for the next round. Can the Saints make it to the next round?

In Group A, Catholic High and Raffles Institution both have similar 2-0 records and all eyes will be on the game between the two traditional rivals when they clash on Friday, February 15 at 1 p.m. at CCAB. Both teams should qualify from their group for the next round.

Gan Eng Seng are playing to expectations in Group B, leading the group with a perfect 3-0 record. Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) have realistic expectations of qualifying for the second round with their 2-1 record and they are tied with Fairfield Methodist who have the same record. One of these two teams should join Gan Eng Seng in the second round.

In Group C, Bukit Merah are the early leaders with a perfect 2-0 record and while Outram and Holy Innocent’s High are tied for second with similar 1-1 records, it’s still too early to count out Whitley (0-1) and Serangoon Gardens (0-1).

Anglo-Chinese School (International) are setting the pace in Group E with a 2-1 record while Queensway are keeping pace with two straight wins. While Ang Mo Kio (0-3) are definitely out of it, Yuying, Peirce and Kuo Chuan Presbyterian still have all to play for with similar 1-1 records.
