I’m quite surprised to see a new comment after so many months. haha. Anyway, I’ve view the YouTube videos that you linked in your comment… to be honest, the warcry movements from Tonga’s Sipi Tau and the Saints Battle Cry movement is rather quite different, the only similarity is more of the ending which is the ‘star jump’. =)
Anyway, thanks everyone for making this story the 2nd top story of the year in RedSports! This shows the richness of the sport – Rugby, and the enthusiasm of Saints and ACSians and all lovers of rugby!

Just wanted to inform saint 1862 and others who are upset that acsi performs the haka – yes, it may be the haka, but we have it in good faith from the NZ people that let us do it. Maori culture belongs to that person as much as the rest of NZ, we respected it and did it in its entirety.
The point is regarding the “originality” of sa’s warcry.

The movements I saw were quite clearly warcry movements from Tonga’s Sipi Tau anyway. Just that you guys customised it to your words.
Bottomline is, there’s nothing wrong with respecting and admiring another culture’s history and sporting pride. But when criticism is founded on the supposed “originality” of your sch’s warcry, saint1862, I don’t think that’s quite right.
Which is worse, travelling to NZ for competitions and granted the permission to do the haka in good faith,(albeit not official authority, but at least native) in its entirety, or to imitate movements that are very uniquely sipi tau and rebranding the words. Hopefully the guys went on a tour of tonga or something.
We all have sporting heroes and respect and emulate them. I’m sure the Pacific and Oceania rugby teams are inspirations, but I half feel if that unjustified comment about originality didnt come up, the whole issue wouldn’t by blown up and argued half as big as it ended up being.

life is laways unfair. even when u go out into the working world. you have to take things in your stride and meet these challenges as they come.
many of us, out here working, are subject to such biasness in the workplace eg. politics, nepotism etc, etc.
yes, it is frustrating. but we have to learn to deal with these in life for The Best Is Yet To be.
Sometimes a refs biasness is not based on school ties but rather than one team is stronger that the other. like compassionate biasness. at least thats what i feel and as much as i understand why they’re showing such biasness, it’s still frustrating at times when u really feel that certain calls made are totally unfair.
and in a sense i can;t help but think that this ‘compassionate biasness’ is labeled against certain schools so much so that the refs appear to always be bias against that particular school.
As players, we get used to this biasness against us cos there’s nothing else you can do lest you get penalized even more but should it really have to be this way?

I agree with Game Time. I believe the refs are professional in their job, and most of all if they make mistakes, its purely because they cant be everyone at the same time.
But in the case of a game of two big rivals, its always important to show that the sporting body is commited to any unbiasness by not putting a ref with a link to either school.
That would rule out either of the team accusing the refs of being bias.
In an ideal situation, it’ d be best to have the best neutral referee officiating the game. If not, I’d rather have an incompetent one refereeing than one who is biased.
But Conspiracy is not wrong with his comments – in which major sporting tournament do you find a referee or officials officiating who are from the same club or country or with some affiliation?
BTW, in response to conspiracy’s comment “a ref and touch judges must not be officiating the match if his or (her) alma mater is playing”. This is a matter that I have raised to Matt Oakley, who is the SRU Referee Development Manager and will now be in charge of appointing referees to games. Although I believe that my fellow refs will referee games without bias and in the true spirit of the game. We must not appear to the public to be biased in any way. So sadly, we will not necessarily get the best referee for the game because of some perceived biasness.
Let’s review this year’s referees, Azhar currently at NIE but used to be HOD PE at RI, Matt Oakley from the UK & Alfred Nathan who is the HOD PE at SJI. As you can see, there are no links to either ACS or SA.
In fact, most of the refs are actually SA old boys or current members of staff at SA.
Aside from this, as referees the moment we step on the field all we concentrate on is the game. School ties etc are left behind.
The following comment is entirely my own and does not reflect the opinion of the other refs, honestly I couldn’t care less about who wins the game. My job is to referee the game as best I can. FYI, I’m an old boy of ACS and have refereed ACS games but have not shown any biasness towards ACS.

my idea of the game is…
take the ball and charge to the oppositions line..(*run for your life)
if you get tackled or fall down, everone huddle together for bonding session and then another guy can have chance at taking the ball and charging.. 🙂
keep doing this for as long as the ref says so ..
