A student surpassing his coach? That seems unheard of, until the 1st All Comers Track and Field Meet held on 18 March (Sunday) at the Bukit Gombak Stadium when Jacob Yao from Catholic High came in second in the pole vault event with a gigantic leap of 4.10m. This height surpassed even that of his coach Ng Kean Mun at 3.90m and more importantly, smashed the previous national under-17 record of 4.05m. This competition was organized as a warm-up for schools before the National Schools Track and Field Competition later in July.

Said Jacob Yao of his feat, “It was really quite a shock to beat my coach as I didn’t expect it. But I believe that I can go higher at the National Inter-School competition in July as my techniques in running and jumping have yet to be perfected.” Scary words indeed from a 15 year-old boy!

At the same meet, Austin Loke from Hwa Chong Institution came in second in the Javelin event with a throw of 48.6m, while Jacob Yao’s Catholic High teammate George Tan Hui Meng managed a creditable 7th place with a throw of 36.54m. Meanwhile, Hwa Chong’s Scott Wong won the discus event, hurling the disc 42.54m. Andrew Ganapathy from Catholic Junior College came in second in the discus with a throw of 36.28m while third place went to Duane Chen from Anglo Chinese School (Independent) with a throw of 33.93m.
