Monday, 2 April 2007 at Clementi Sports Hall

Match report by Mr Ian Chew of Catholic High. Thanks, Ian!

Nanyang Girls beat Singapore Chinese Girls School in a nail-biting thriller on 2 April at the Clementi Sports Hall in a National School’s B Division match. Although both teams had already qualified for the quarter final group matches, it was crucial to secure the top spot for their group as that may mean facing easier opponents in the next round.

The match looked to have been sewn up by Nanyang Girls as they held a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter. But the SCGS team seemed to have other ideas. Boosted by the cheers of their boisterous supporters, they managed to claw their way back to a 39-39 tie at the end of regulation time.

Overtime!

Another nerve wrecking 5 minutes of extra time ensued. SCGS drew first blood to lead 41-39 but Nanyang replied to level the score. Tiredness and desperation were evident on the faces of the players as both teams made uncharacteristic errors. SCGS then went ahead 42-41 when one of their players converted a free throw with 45 seconds left on the clock to the excited screams of their supporters!

That was to prove vain, however. Nanyang Girls managed to score a basket to lead 43-42 and held on to win the match.
