Wednesday, January 31, 2007 – Serangoon Secondary School beat Deyi Secondary School 2-0 in their season opening game. After the opening jitters, the teams went in search of goals at either end. For the first 20 minutes, Serangoon Secondary, decked out in orange tops and black shorts, had the better chances to open the scoring.
Serangoon striker Khairul Nizam received a good cross from Abdillah but missed the target completely. Serangoon’s captain Haziq missed two clear chances.
Deyi goalkeeper Zaki made save after save while their defenders with the lanky Vivegan and captain Rainer Chiam, were outstanding. However they were
unable to play themselves out of defence and could only hold out until the half hour mark.
The first goal came ironically just after Serangoon had survived a fast counter attack by Deyi and launched their own. In no time at all, the ball was in the packed Deyi goalmouth, and in the scramble and confusion, Haziq managed to put the ball in. Serangoon 1 Deyi 0.
In response, Deyi upped the tempo by challenging and tackling strongly but paid a heavy price for this. In the 35th minute, Serangoon was awarded a free kick after a bad challenge on center-back Vincent in midfield. Haziq calmly struck a ball which sailed over everyone, including the rooted goalkeeper, into the right corner. It was an exquisite beauty of a goal. Serangoon 2 Deyi 0 (1st half).
The action in the 2nd period was, in every way, more pulsating and intense than the first. Serangoon had more of the play and created many superb chances to further increase the scoreline. Most shots were on target but Deyi became more resolute in defence, clearing off the line on several occasions. Then, on a rare attack, Deyi was awarded a penalty in the final 20 minutes. Serangoon goalkeeper Shafiie did not have to make a save as the ball was blasted past the left post. Referee: Mohd Azmi

We are clearly improving!!
