In the event’s inaugural contest at the annual National Schools, Cedar Girls’ Choo Jia Yi and Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)’s John Tan emerged as the champions in the C Division girls’ and boys’ 200-metre hurdles finals respectively.
Wong Rui Yue of Victoria Junior College (VJC) came into the shot put competition aiming for a personal best (PB), but she definitely did not expect to achieve it with only her third throw of the competition. In the other field events that day, Raffles Institution’s (RI) Ryan Ng came out on top in the A Division discus throw event with a final distance of 44.68 metres. The second-year student, however, admitted that he did not do as well as he had hoped.
Jade Chew marginally falls short of Michelle Sng's 16-year-old B Division girls' high jump record of 1.64m, but attained a new personal best of 1.62m to improve on the 1.61m C Division mark she had set last year.
The penultimate day of the 59th National School Swimming Championships saw a new under-17 national record in the B Division 50m Freestyle through Jonathan Tan of Anglo Chinese School (Independent) [ACS (I)] who led the way among Singapore’s rising swimming stars.
Elizabeth ran 12.41 seconds, clocked with a tailwind of 0.1 metre/second to break Lim Joo Lee's C division hand-timed 12.6s record that was set in 1993. Teammate Bernice Liew claimed the silver in a personal best 12.72s. Both girls later combined to help Nanyang Girls' High School to gold in the 4 by 100 metres relay.
Both NYJC and SJI did not qualify for the semi-finals and finished their season in the top eight.
Daryl Ho of Anglo-Chinese Junior College and Helou Mekal of St Joseph’s International were tied for second place in 24.82s.
Dylan Tan of Hwa Chong Institution came in second in 4:32.41, while Catholic High's Chester Lee ran a 4:32.61 to finish third.
