Singapore Institute of Management, Friday, September 19, 2014 — Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) defeated Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) 3–0 (25–7, 25–8, 25–13) in their final game of the Singapore University Games (SUniG) Volleyball Championship. SIM completed their season with a 3–1 win-loss record to finish as first runners-up.

SIM established their foothold early in the first set with their dominant offensive play. Mark Leong (#16) was quick with his spikes as he took advantage of SUTD’s defensive loopholes to help SIM clinch the first set with a score of 25–7.

Throughout the game, Aaron Chong (#2) kept SUTD going on offence with his spikes, but could not get the better of the SIM defence. Yap Feng Kai (#2) and Jonas Su (#9) helmed SIM’s defence, blocking several SUTD spike attempts. SUTD could not recover the ball as quickly and they went down 8–25 in the second set.

In the closing set, Aaron Chong (#2) continued his stellar performance, scoring several points through his spikes. On the defensive end, SUTD could not contain SIM’s offence as the latter took the final set with a score of 25–13.

SIM captain, Kenneth Quek (#6), said, “We were playing in a more relaxed manner, as majority of our key players are injured, and we just did what we could with the rest of the players.”

On finishing the SUNiG Men’s Volleyball season in second place, the SIM student added, “I’m quite proud of our achievement and there is nothing to regret. It’s a good closure to SUniG and I think the team played very well throughout the entire tournament.”
