Singapore Institute of Management, Saturday, September 13, 2014 — Defending champions (NTU) defeated National University of Singapore (NUS) 2–1 to record their third victory in the Singapore University Games (SUniG) Floorball Championship.

Brian Tan (#9) scored both NTU’s goals, while Eugene Lee (#88) scored the only goal for NUS.

Just 35 seconds into the game, Brian Tan (#9) scored his first goal through an assist by Abdul Wafiy (#7). Five minutes later, Brian scored his second goal to put NTU up 2–0.

NUS stepped up on defence in the second and final period, preventing any easy shots from the defending champions. NUS pushed the ball on offence, forcing NTU to play a defensive game for the remaining periods.

Late in the final period, NTU’s momentary defensive lapse allowed an unmarked Eugene Lee (#88) to drive a long shot from the right flank into the net, reducing the deficit to a single point.

In the final minute, an incorrect push by Abdul Wafiy (#7) resulted in a power play situation, but NUS were unable to capitalise on it. NTU held on for the eventual 2–1 victory.

Muhammad Azhari (#23), NTU vice-captain, said, “We knew that this game was a do-or-die for us to qualify for the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Games. We played well in the first period, just that towards the end, we were off-focus. That’s where NUS started to dominate plays. We held our ground and got back together on defence to dominate the centre, so they can’t shoot well.”

With the victory, NTU have a 3–1 win-loss record, while NUS have a 2–2 win-loss record. NTU will next face Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) in the final game of the SUniG season on Tuesday, September 16, at 8.45 p.m. The game will be played at Singapore Institute of Management.

“For us as a team, we like to take things one at a time and we do not focus on the future. We will definitely work things out when we play SIM. We know that they have very strong defensive players. We are going to match up to them and do our best,” added Azhari (#23).
