PESEB, Tuesday, August 19, 2014 — A crucial defensive effort by Senthilnathan Kumaraval (#7) prevented a comeback from Montfort Secondary and earned St. Joseph’s Institution (SJI) a 5–0 win in the semi-final of the National C Division Rugby (Plate) Championship.
Haris Dzulkifli (#14) scored the only try of the game in the first half.
Late in the opening half, an unmarked Mohamed Nurfitri (#12) slipped through the Montfort defence, setting up Haris Dzulkifli (#14) for a try. Matthias Isaiah Silva (#4) was unable to score the conversion and SJI took a 5–0 lead at the end of the half.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Montfort missed their chance to take the lead when they failed to convert two penalty attempts. In the closing minutes of the half, Brendan Wong (#13) of SJI was awarded a yellow card for dangerous play and was sent to the sin bin.
Taking advantage of the situation, Montfort’s Lucas Chan (#21) managed to break through the SJI defence and sprint towards the try-line. SJI’s Senthilnathan Kumaraval (#7) eventually thwarted Chan’s (#21) attempt with a crucial tackle that sealed SJI’s 5–0 victory.
SJI will play Pioneer Secondary in the final, which will be held at 3 p.m. on August 26. The final will be played at the National Stadium.
