Hillgrove Secondary School, Tuesday, July 29, 2014 — Northland Secondary School (NLS) dominated the game to defeat Loyang Secondary School (LYS) 9–2 in the National C Division Floorball Championship. Northland are tied for second with a 2–1 win-loss record, while Loyang are ranked third.

Northland’s Muhammad Zaki B Zulkarnain (#77) was top scorer with four goals, and his teammates Jharen Glen Victoriano Yap (#39) and Darryl Tan (#43) had two goals each. Loyang’s (#23) and (#14) led their team with one goal each.

The first period initially saw both teams evenly matched as neither side could create opportunities to score. Notably, (LYS #23) quickly cleared balls before his opponents could come close to the net. Halfway through, Jharen Glen Victoriano Yap (NLS #39) capitalised on an undefended net to shoot from half-court, scoring the first goal of the game.

Loyang responded with an aggressive attack, but found the ball consistently stolen by Northland. With the goalpost often undefended, Northland’s Darryl (#43), Jasper Kua (#13) and Muhammad Zaki (#77) scored three unanswered goals to end the first period 4–0 in Northland’s favour.

Northland moved to attack early into the second period, with Loyang’s goalkeeper making a save at the 27th second. With slow, deliberate passes, Northland controlled the game to maintain pressure on Loyang. However, Northland could not convert their possession into goals.

Loyang’s first goal came in the third minute, when (#23)’s attempt from half-court found the back of Northland’s net. However, Muhammad Zaki (NLS #77) quickly answered for Northland after a timely assist by Muhammad Danial (NLS #26) to ensure a 5–1 Northland lead at the end of the second period.

Loyang rallied in the last period as (#9) pressured Northland players and (#23) defended the goal. However, Northland maintained control over the ball and Muhammad Zaki (#77) scored off a rebound two minutes in. As Northland kept up their aggressive attacks, Loyang’s goalkeeper calmly made multiple saves.

Seizing an opening, (LYS #14) swept in with the ball from the left wing to score Loyang’s second goal. Loyang’s (#9), (#14) and (#23) notably attempted to score many times, but found themselves blocked by Northland.

Accurate wrist shots by Darryl (NLS #43) and Jharen Glen (NLS #39) saw Northland end the game as 9–2 winners.

Northland’s captain Takashi Watanabe (#28) said, “It was a tiring, yet exciting game. We worked hard to counter often, but we still need to improve on our passes and time taken while passing.”
