Anglican High School, Friday, July 25, 2014 — Timely shots from Nigel Yap (#6) propelled Anglican High (AHS) to a 44–42 victory over Dunman High (DHS) in the semi-final of the East Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

Nigel Yap (#6) was heroic for Anglican High, with crucial and timely shots that kept Anglican High in the lead. Kiren Teo (#9) led Anglican High with 15 points while Nicholas Quah (#5) added 10. Fabian (#7) scored 15 points for Dunman High.

Despite early foul trouble from Kiren Teo (#9) and Kenneth Koh (#15), Anglican High were able to earn an 18–12 lead to end the opening quarter.

Dunman High commenced the second quarter with five straight points to reduce the deficit to a single point. Jason Wong (AHS #10) responded with a fast break layup off a steal to stop the run. However, two straight jumpers from Hao Yeung (#14) and Yan Zhou (#5) gave Dunman High their first lead of the game at 21–20, forcing an Anglican High time-out. Nigel Yap (#6) powered Anglican High back to a 27–25 lead with five straight points.

Kenneth Koh (AHS #15) was the key defensive anchor in the third quarter, denying the bigger Tan Zheng (DHS #13) from getting his shots off in the paint easily. Anglican High outscored Dunman High 12–8 to take a six-point lead at the end of the quarter.

Early in the closing quarter, Fabian (DHS #7) dropped a short jumper to reduce the deficit to four points. Nigel Yap (AHS #6) capped a 5–0 run with a fast break layup to put Anglican High up nine points.

Dunman High used a time-out to spark a run in a bid to reduce the deficit. Fabian (DHS #7) capped the 7–0 run with an and-one basket and made a free throw to trim Anglican High’s lead to two points, with just 30 seconds left.

A frenzied scramble for the ball led to a Dunman High possession with 0.4 seconds to play. Dunman High could not convert the shot as Anglican High advanced to the final with the 44–42 victory.

Anglican High captain, Kiren Teo (#9), said, “We were very tense and scared during the last moments of the game, but in the end, we did it, so it’s a good feeling. Against Dunman Secondary, our shooting has to be on-form. Dunman have much bigger players, so we have to be faster than them, and work hard on our rebounding and boxing out.”

Dunman High will face Manjusri Secondary in the 3rd/4th playoff match on July 29. Anglican High will play Dunman Secondary in the final on July 30. Both games will be played at Anglican High School.
