PESEB, Wednesday, July 23, 2014 — Gan Eng Seng School (GES) defeated Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary (KCP) 54–37 in their final game of the South Zone C Division Boys Basketball Championship. Gan Eng Seng finished the season with a 2–3 win-loss record, and both teams will not advance to the semi-finals.

Jia Chen (GES #11) was the top scorer with 19 points, while Gildon (KCP #13) led his team with 18.

The first quarter initially saw Gan Eng Seng aggressively attacking, with Jia Chen (GES #11) driving the ball across half the court to score the first two points of the game. With Gan Eng Seng players pushing hard, Jia Chen (GES #11) caught a rebound and scored, bringing the score to 10–0 as Kuo Chuan struggled to reply.

Kuo Chuan broke through halfway with Gildon (KCP #13) going for the layup, earning them their first two points of the game. With Gan Eng Seng regularly intercepting passes, they maintained a field goal difference of at least five to end the quarter 16–7.

Gan Eng Seng continued extend their lead in the second quarter, outscoring Kuo Chuan 12–8 in the quarter. While both sides stepped up on attack, many shots kept missing throughout the quarter.

Kuo Chuan made an unexpected comeback in the third quarter, which was led by Gildon (KCP #13) who scored 10 points in the period. Gan Eng Seng lagged behind as Kuo Chuan kept intercepting passes and attempting to score. With a quarter score of fifteen points, Kuo Chuan narrowed the overall score to 34–30 for a visible shot of winning the game.

On their third quarter pushback, Gideon (KCP #13) said, “Our second team played well and was hungry for the win, but we did not have the size to capitalize on that.”

Thereafter, Gan Eng Seng regained their form in the last quarter, with Jia Chen (GES #11) scoring in the first fifteen seconds. With a swift layup by Joshua Ang (GES #15), they scored seven unanswered points to bring the score to 41–30.

However, a free throw by Tat Zhang (KCP #15) momentarily tipped the tables in their favour, and Zhong Zhe (KCP #12) and Gildon (KCP #13) swiftly intercepted passes and scored four points. From then on, Gan Eng Seng aggressively stepped up to snatch rebounds and score 14 unanswered points. Undeterred, Kuo Chuan kept up their attempts to gain possession of the ball and Gideon (KCP #13) finally scored in the last 10 seconds, bringing the tally to 54–37.

On his team’s last game of the season, Gan Eng Seng’s Jia Chen (#11) said, “We did badly in the third quarter, but had fun. Most importantly, we gain experience for our attempt next year.”

Added Hyqal (#7), “We did quite well in offense, despite the third quarter. We aim to do better next year.”
