CHIJ Saint Theresa’s Convent, Monday, May 21, 2014 – Saint Theresa’s Convent (STC) defeated Canberra Secondary (CSS) 4–0 to win their second game of the National C Division Floorball Championship.

STC captain Pearlynn Lim (#18) led with two goals, while Theva Darshini (#75) and Jolene Ng (#88) had one goal each. Saint Theresa’s Convent currently have a 2–1 win-loss record, while Canberra have lost their past three games.

Saint Theresa’s Convent dominated possession throughout the game, but faced low conversion. Canberra made attempts to intercept the ball and shoot, but they were either saved or blocked.

The first period saw Canberra’s defence holding up against Saint Theresa’s Convent attacks. Early into a game, (CSS #76) was benched for two minutes for incorrect distance, leaving Canberra in a power play with three players. Both Pearlynn (STC #18) and Darshini (STC #75) had several scoring opportunities, but attempts mostly went wide.

Canberra took advantage of the misses to drive the ball across the court, but repeatedly found themselves blocked by Rachel Ng (STC #77) and Jolene (STC #88). Halfway through, Darshini (STC #75) seized an opportunity to slot the ball in from the right wing for the first goal of the game. Saint Theresa’s Convent rallied to aggressively attacked, but attempts missed or were blocked.

Early into the second period, greater Canberra possession saw Saint Theresa’s Convent’s goalkeeper saving two consecutive attempts to score. Thereafter, Saint Theresa’s Convent regained possession of the ball but still faced difficulty converting, prompting the coach to call for a timeout.

Saint Theresa’s Convent players returned to the game with greater focus, deliberately slowing down their passes to retain control of the ball. This proved to be successful as Jolene (STC #88)’s shot found the back of net halfway through, and Pearlynn (STC #18) pulled one for the team with two minutes left.

With fifty seconds left in the second period, Melissa Salimman (CSS #18) was benched for playing in the goalkeeper’s crease and blocking the ball. Amanda Ou (#56) of Saint Theresa’s Convent took the penalty shot, which was blocked by Canberra goalkeeper Amnani Fatin (#22). With just three players, Canberra held up against the attacks by Saint Theresa’s Convent.

The third period saw both sides pushing hard to score, and Nur Fifi Dyanna (CSS #13) repeatedly drove the ball across the court. Saint Theresa’s Convent mostly possessed the ball, but looked to be distracted as their shots went into uncovered areas that were easily intercepted by Canberra.

Pearlynn (STC #18) found many of her attempts blocked by Canberra, but an accurate wrist-shot in the sixth minute gave Saint Theresa’s Convent their fourth goal. Subsequent attempts to score were either intercepted, blocked or saved by the goalkeeper.

Jolene Ng (STC #88), who felt that Saint Theresa’s Convent could have done better, said, “We need more teamwork, to communicate more and ensure full court pressure. We are thankful for our coach Priscilla who motivates us to do better.”

Saint Theresa’s Convent captain Pearlynn (#18) added, “I think we should have encouraged each other and given our best instead of slacking. As our coach says, ‘Teamwork is the best dream work’.”
