PESEB, Thursday, July 10, 2014 — Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary (KCP) beat Queensway Secondary (QSS) 41–22 in the first round of the South Zone C Division Boys Basketball Championship. Gildon (KCP #13) led all scorers with 14 points, while Justin Sim (QSS #4) paced his team with eight points.

The win means Kuo Chuan qualify for the second round with a 3–1 win-loss record in Group F. Queensway finished their season with a 2–2 win-loss record. They are out of the tournament.

The first quarter saw both teams miss a lot of shots early on. Kuo Chuan started the game on a 5–0 run, led by the scoring of Tat Zhang (KCP #15). However, Queensway crept back into the game behind baskets by Justin Sim (QSS #4) and Low Wei Qing (QSS #8). Kuo Chuan’s full court press proved to effective, as they were able to generate a lot of steals out of it.

Gildon (KCP #13) was in fine form for Kuo Chuan, as Queensway could not find a way to stop his scoring in the second quarter. The Queensway players seemed shaky on the ball, turning the ball over through errant passes. Kuo Chuan were able to hold Queensway to only four points in the period.

Queensway’s anaemic offence continued in the third period, where they only mustered two points. They took a lot of off-balanced shots, which resulted in misses. Kuo Chuan were also having trouble scoring, but were able to extend their lead.

Queensway woke up in the final period, as they went on a 10–0 run to start the period. This mildly rattled the Kuo Chuan players, as they saw their lead trim to a single digit. The Kuo Chuan players showed good composure to block out the rally, putting up an 8–0 run of their own to close out the game. They eventually won 41–22, booking their ticket in the second round.

Kuo Chuan captain, Eugene (#8), said, “We aim to qualify for the zonal top four and enter the nationals. There was chemistry between the players today and that helped us get the win. We have to work on our decision making in future games to improve.”
