Physical Education and Sports Education Branch, Tuesday, July 8, 2014 — Jurong Secondary (JSS) defeated Hillgrove Secondary (HG) 2–0 (25–20, 25–7) in the West Zone C Division Girls Volleyball Championship.

This is Jurong’s third consecutive win in the first round of the tournament, and they will be facing Bukit View Secondary next in their final group game. On the other hand, Hillgrove currently hold a 2–1 win-loss record and they will be meeting Greenridge Secondary next.

Both Jurong and Hillgrove appeared to be evenly-matched early into the first set, and as such the game was tied at 8–8. Hillgrove then went on to take their first lead of the game (9–8) and coordinated well on court to push their lead to 11–8. Following a time-out, Jurong came back into the game more focused and started to chase the points. Yew Jia Ying (JSS #10) went for spikes one after another to pace her team’s offensive plays, gradually reducing the deficit and eventually levelled at 12–12 with Hillgrove.

Then on, not more than two points separated the teams at any one time until it was 17–17. Jurong took the lead from there and never looked back thereafter. Belen Lim’s (JSS #1) well-timed spikes towards the end of the set ensured a 25–20 win.

Early into the second set, Jurong and Hillgrove were tied at 2–2 but Jurong’s good team effort allowed them to take a 6–2 lead. Hillgrove’s string of mistakes thereafter allowed Jurong to score four more unanswered points to make it 10–2. Following Hillgrove’s poor team coordination on court, Jurong took the chance to take a clear 10-point lead, and then went on to close the set 25–7.

Jurong captain, Jia Ying (#10), said, “It was an okay game as we didn’t perform up to expectations. I think we could improve on our spiking.”

Co-captain, Letitia (#4), said, “I think our performance wasn’t up to standard. We could improve on our defence. Our goal for the season is to go into nationals top four.”
