Senja-Cashew Community Centre, Sunday, May 25, 2014 — Netballers Jean Chia and Chan Hui Mui took a break away from netball to compete in their year’s edition of the 3-on-3 Women’s Basketball at the Community Games. The pair suited up for TJCSC Helltics, which is a faction of Taman Jurong Community Sports Club (CSC).

Both Jean and Hui Mui are participating in their second Community Games together. “Our friends asked us to join actually, because they were short of players, and we didn’t mind trying out new sports. Being a sportsperson, I think it is always good to be open about other games,” said Jean, a full-time teacher at Jurong West Primary.

“When I joined last year, I thought it was quite fun and of course, we get to play together with our good friends,” said Hui Mui, who is a student at Nanyang Polytechnic.

“I guess basketball is a different ball game in its own. Basketball is a different experience altogether. And the fact that it is the Community Games, I get to see a lot of people here, and make new friends. The Games bring the community closer together, and we get to meet a lot of friends that we have not seen in ages,” added the 22-year-old.

On which sport they preferred, both exclaimed, “Netball!” Both Jean and Hui Mui just took part in the recently concluded Cheers Netball Super League. Jean is a member of the Mission Mannas, which claimed the championship with a 53–47 victory over the Blaze Dolphins.

Due to the pair’s participation in the Cheers Netball Super League, they were unable to train together with the rest of the team. “Honestly, when I went in for my first game, I was telling myself to just adjust accordingly. I couldn’t get it going at the start so I was merely doing what I can in terms of assisting and facilitating the offence. I think that’s more important and it worked out just right,” said Jean.
