Republic Polytechnic, Monday, April 28, 2014 — Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) claimed its first win of the season by decisively beating Innova Junior College (IJC) 67–8 in the National A Division Netball Championship. NYJC lost to RI 18–59 in its first game.

NYJC seemed to be the stronger team from the start. They were solid defensively, as they prevented IJC from making passes into the final third. On offence, their Goal Shooter and Goal Attack had a bad time shooting the ball. However, but girls were able to rebound most of their misses and score them. NYJC rattled off 15 straight points before IJC eventually got on the board.

The second quarter saw NYJC having their way with IJC. Their Goal Shooter was having an easy time in the attacking third, as she was able to score at will. IJC did not help themselves by missing their shot attempts when presented with the chance.

Shooting woes for IJC continued into the third quarter. They were able to score only one goal in the period. The lack of depth on the bench for IJC became evident as their players started to look fatigued. NYJC were able to capitalise on this, outscoring them 19–1.

By the final quarter, NYJC were so far ahead that they could afford to substitute their reserves in. Despite the changes, NYJC’s offence still hummed along smoothly. Their players showcased good movement to get into open space. Their Goal Shooter was able to score four consecutive points, extending NYJC’s lead. NYJC eventually took the game 67–8, giving them a decent chance to qualify for the second round.

NYJC captain, Ricia, said, “I felt today’s game was good. We set our goals and we know we have more important matches coming up. Hence, we wanted to increase the score margin as much as possible. We weren’t warmed up in the first quarter, thus we didn’t do so well. We are aiming for the second round, but we have to beat Yishun JC and Catholic JC to advance. We take each match as a stepping stone to improve.”
