Republic Polytechnic, Monday, April 28, 2014 — Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) started their season with an 81–1 win over National Junior College (NJC) in the National A Division Netball Championship.
Hwa Chong’s lineup was significantly taller than NJC’s, which gave them a distinct advantage on defence. The Hwa Chong players used their height to deflect passes for turnovers, which occurred many times throughout the match.
HCI started the game with an aggressive defence, which involved their Goal Attack, Goal Shooter and Centre pressing the ball whenever NJC took possession. This proved to be successful as HCI generated a lot of turnovers. NJC were able to stop the first three HCI possessions, but the goals started to flow for HCI from that point on. NJC had some attempts on offence, but they were unable to convert on any of them.
NJC’s first and only goal of the game came in the second half. After a fruitless first half filled with interceptions, NJC were able to put together a solid possession to find their Goal Shooter in the final third. She was able to score the goal.
Hwa Chong’s Centre was a two-way threat in the game. Offensively, she was able to manage the game and feed the balls in to the Goal Attack and Goal Shooter in the attacking third. She also organised the team well on defence, working together with her Wing Defence and Goal Defence to create a lot of turnovers.
In the end, Hwa Chong ended the game 81–1 winners. They will look to improve on their second place finish last year.
Hwa Chong captain, Claudia, said, “The game went smoothly for us today. We wanted to start well and we were able to do that. It is our first win of the season. We plan to go as far as we can and improve on our second-place finish last year. Hopefully we make it to the title game and emerge champions.”
