Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, April 28, 2014 — Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) defeated Dunman High School (DHS) 63–31 in the second round of the National A Division Girls Basketball Championship.

Sim Lee Ching (NYJC #11) led her team with 11 points, while Rennie (DHS #12) scored a team-high six points.

The first quarter ended 16–9. Lee Ching (NYJC #11) netted a three and scored on a drive to register five points, while Sixu Vongsuvanish (NYJC #6) and Ong Sze Ming (NYJC #9) had four points each. At the start of the second quarter, NYJC scored five unanswered points to up their lead to 21–9. Cady (DHS #10) converted a freethrow to put in the first point for the DHS side. Both ends then took turns to score on drives until it was 15–23. NYJC then went on another 5–0 run to lead 28–15 going into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, Winnchis Yap (NYJC #15) scored the first basket for her team, and Tan Li Min (NYJC #7) converted on a drive to make it 32–15. DHS were unable to get past NYJC’s dominating defence and only managed to score one point on freethrow midway through the quarter (16–38). NYJC scored mostly on their fastbreaks, and also dished out well-placed passes to Winnchis (NYJC #15) in the paint, who will then convert strongly against her defenders. NYJC held a 45–21 lead at the end of the third quarter.

In the last quarter, DHS took down several offensive rebounds and followed up with conversions in the paint. NYJC on the other hand continued to capitalize on their fast breaks to gradually pull away from DHS. Towards the end of the quarter, both teams failed to find the range with most of their shots and squandered their scoring opportunities. However, NYJC still managed to outscore DHS 18–10 in the last quarter to take home a 63–31 win over DHS.

This is NYJC’s second win in the second round of the tournament.

NYJC captain, Audrey (#14) said, “I think we played very well and improved a lot since the start of the season.”
