Bedok Sports Hall, Monday, April 21, 2014 — Bukit Merah’s (BMS) dominance in the second period led them to beat Victoria School (VS) 7–5 in the semi-final of the National B Division Floorball Championship. Tristan See (#8) led Bukit Merah with 5 goals while Thaddeus Tan (#3) and Abdul Mateen (#4) led Victoria with 2 goals each.

Both teams met in last year’s 3rd/4th playoff match where Bukit Merah defeated Victoria 8–5 to clinch bronze. This time, both teams face each other again for a place in the final.

Bukit Merah drew first blood of the match through their captain for the match, Tristan See (BMS #8). VS soon responded with a goal from Thaddeus Tan (VS #3). However, Bukit Merah extended their lead thanks to a goal from their nimble forward, Muhammad Harith (BMS #21). The first period ended with 2–1 Bukit Merah lead.

The second period saw Bukit Merah doubling their lead through the strong forward pairing of Tristan See (BMS #8) and Muhammad Harith (BMS #21), who each scored a goal during the opening minutes of the period. Victoria eventually managed to pass through the Bukit Merah’s defence and they found their second goal of the match through their defender, Abdul Mateen (#4). However, Tristan See (BMS #8) managed to tap in a rebound to score a hat trick. With the goal, Bukit Merah led Victoria 5–2 at the end of the second period.

Victoria started the last period more aggressively and most of the time, they had three players in Bukit Merah’s half. Though they had a lot of opportunities to score, most of their shots were either off-target or saved by the Bukit Merah keeper. Eventually, their persistence paid off and Abdul Mateen (#4) scored Victoria’s third goal of the match. However, Bukit Merah responded by scoring another goal again through Tristan See (BMS #8).

Despite the two-goal deficit, Victoria continued taking shots at Bukit Merah’s goal but the agile Bukit Merah keeper saved all the shots. Victoria’s swift passing allowed them to finally find the back of the net through Muhammad Haziq (VS #23). With rising morale on the bench, Victoria narrowed the deficit to a single point (5–6) with a goal from Thaddeus Tan (VS #3).

Victoria was desperate to find the equalizer they mvoed all of their players in Bukit Merah’s half. A momentary lapse in Victoria’s defence, resulted in Tristan See (BMS #8) finding the back of the net for the 5th time during the match. Bukit Merah eventually sealed the match 7–5.

Bukit Merah captain, Mohammad Aidil (BMS #36) commented, “The game was very challenging as Victoria is a tough team. We persevered on, played our best and managed to pull off a win and qualify for the final.”

Victoria captain, Muhammad Khair (#2), commented, “We were pumped up for the last few minutes because we knew we could get it back but we over commited and left the defence open. Bukit Merah was a very worthy team to go to the finals and it was one of the best teams that we have ever faced.”

Victoria will be playing in the 3rd/4th playoff match for the third time in a row against St. Gabriel’s, last year’s runners-up. Bukit Merah will be playing against defending champions, Northland Secondary, in hopes to reclaim the title which they last won in 2010. Both games will be played on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Bedok Sports Hall.
