Yio Chu Kang Sports Hall, Monday, April 21, 2014 — After a tight first quarter, Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH) pulled away to defeat Tanjong Katong Secondary School (TK) 33–20 in the 3rd-placing match of the National B Division Girls Netball Championship.

Both sides appeared to be evenly-matched in the first quarter, as not more than two points separated the teams at any one time. Towards the end of the quarter, both NYGH and TK were fumbling with their passes. NYGH only managed a slight 8–7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Led by the Goal Attack and Wing Attack players, NYGH managed to score relentlessly from the start of the second quarter. The players located their Goal Shooter in the circle with well-executed passes, where she followed up to score points for the team. She was dominant offensively with her accuracy at the net. NYGH’s Goal Defence led her team defensively, putting constant pressure on TK.

Faced with good defensive efforts from NYGH, TK missed their shots and lacked possession. Their Goal Attack managed to put in the first point for her team midway into the second quarter despite pressure from her defender. That was also the only point scored by TK in the quarter as they failed to convert after that. NYGH went on a 10–1 scoring run to pull away to lead 18–8 going into the halftime break.

TK’s Goal Attack opened the scoring for her team, converting at the net to score the first point in the third quarter. Following that, TK grabbed a couple of offensive rebounds, but were unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunities to reduce the deficit. On the other hand, NYGH’s Goal Attack was accurate with her shots this quarter, helping to put in several points to keep the lead in check. NYGH sustained their 10-point lead from the first half, leading 25–15 at the end of the third quarter.

TK struggled with stepping issues in the final quarter, thus allowing NYGH to gain more possession of the ball. NYGH continued to convert well at the net, putting up a good game to finish 33–20 winners.

NYGH moved from a fourth position last year to clinch third this time round. TK failed to reach nationals top four last year, but improved to come in fourth.

TK vice-captain, Valencia, said, “It was a great experience and it’s been fun. I think what’s most important is to enjoy the game and do our best.”

NYGH captain, Clara, said, “I think the game was good just now. Both teams played well. For our team, I think it’s a good way to end our season on a high note.”

NYGH vice-captain, Christabel, added, “We played with good team effort too. Will play our best too next year.”
