Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, April 16, 2014 — Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) edged out Raffles Institution (RI) in a close finish in the girls’ A Division 4×100 metres relay final at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships.

The HCI quartet of Jeannette Lim, Janine Foo, Magdalene Ho and Thia Yi Yi clocked a time of 51.05 seconds to finish in first place.

RI finished in second place in 51.08 seconds, while Victoria Junior College rounded up the podium with a time of 51.41s.

The meet record is held by National Junior College. That team clocked a time of 49.40 seconds in 2005 to set the mark.

HCI and RI were evenly-matched through all four legs of the relay, but it was actually VJC who were in pole position after the final changeover. However, anchor runner Janine Lim dropped from first to third when she was passed by HCI’s Thia Yi Yi and RI’s Jannah Wong on the home straight.

Yi Yi, who had a slight edge over six-time hurdles champion and individual 100m winner Jannah at the final changeover, maintained the advantage and managed to just hold off a fast-finishing Jannah, for whom the finish line came too soon.

Yi Yi, who won the 200m and 400m titles, said, “The win was quite surprising as our timings were really close. We won by only 0.03 seconds. We were shocked and excited when we found out that we won. We lost to Raffles last year, so it was good to clinch first this time round.”

Her teammate Janine spoke about their future prospects: “We hope to defend the title and do better next year.”

Hwa Chong have finished in the top two for the last eight editions of this race.
