National B Div Basketball Nanyang Girls vs Jurong

Clementi Sports Hall, Thursday, April 17, 2014 — Jurong Secondary beat Nanyang Girls’ High 47–35 in the second round of the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship. Nur Khardiyanty (Jurong #4) led all scorers with a 27-point effort, while Lim Boon Yee (Nanyang #12) paced her team with 10 points.

Both teams held 1–1 win-loss records in the group prior to this match. The winner of the game would clinch the remaining semi-final berth.

Nanyang Girls’ started off strong, as their front court of Lim Boon Yee (Nanyang #12) and Tan Li Wen (Nanyang #14) had four points apiece in the first quarter. Both girls were able to make light work of the Jurong defence, getting easy shots in the paint. However, Jurong came back to score six straight points, taking a four-point lead at the end of the period.

Jurong started to break away in the second quarter, extending their lead. Nur Shahidah (Jurong #15) was dominant on the boards, snagging every rebound that came her way. Charmian Cheah (Nanyang #13) nailed a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the quarter, which kept Nanyang Girls’ only six points behind.

The third quarter was a defensive struggle, as both teams held each other to single digits. Nur Khardiyanty (Jurong #4) was unstoppable for Jurong, accounting for all of Jurong’s six points in the quarter.

Nanyang Girls’ came close to making a comeback in the final quarter. However, Jurong were able to find a response each time. In the end, the match finished 47–35 in Jurong’s favour.

Jurong will now face Singapore Chinese Girls’ School in the semi-final on Monday, April 21, at Clementi Sports Hall at 1.30pm.

Jurong captain, Nur Shahidah (#15), said, “I’m speechless. Everyone played well individually today. Our fighting spirit is crazy. Now that we’ve reached our target, we will definitely play our best in the semi-final.”
