Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, April 16, 2014 — Muhammad Hariz Bin Darajit of Raffles Institution won the B Division 100m final in a time of 11.36 seconds at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships. Singapore Sports School’s Muhammad Syazani bin Abdul Wahid, the defending champion, had to settle for second place after finishing just 0.01s behind.

Hariz had the better start, but Syazani drew even by the halfway mark. Both runners then kept pace with each other right till the tape, but Hariz proved to be the winner by the smallest of margins.

Hariz said, “It was unexpected. It’s my first time running in the 100m and I want to take the chance to thank my coach, my parents, my teammates and especially my granduncle.”

He equaled his personal best clocked in the heats.

SSP’s Joel Ho, who finished third in the C Division 100m last year, claimed the bronze again.

The B Division 100m electronically-timed record is held by Shahrir Mohd Anuar, then of Singapore Sports School, who clocked 10.90s in 2009. Hong Jinsheng, then of Jin Tai Secondary, set the hand-timed mark of 10.8s in 1985.

It was the closest finish in a Boys’ B Division 100m final since 1996, when Aaron Huang edged out current Club Zoom president Tan Wei Leong 11.58s to 11.59s.
