Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, April 16, 2014 — Anglo-Chinese Junior College mounted a stunning comeback in the final leg to clinch gold in the boys’ A Division 4×400 metres relay at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships. Anchor runner Zubin Muncherji was about 40m behind first place when he took the hand-off from his teammate in fourth position, but was able to catch up and take an unassailable lead in the home straight.
The quartet of Ng Wei Ming, Yusuff Abdul Rahman, Gideon Chia and Zubin clocked a time of 3 minutes 28.55 seconds to take the title.
The meet record is held by Raffles Institution. That team clocked a time of 3 minutes 19.64 seconds in 2011 to set the mark.
Hwa Chong Institution came in second in a time of 3:29.28, while Raffles Institution clocked 3:29.80 to finish third.
Wei Ming, ACJC’s lead-off runner, said, “I am really overjoyed with this win. Right up to the final leg, we were in fourth. As a team, we stay together and did our best, so the win was a bonus.”
Second runner Yusuff said, “We really believed in ourselves and the team. We want to thank our teachers, coaches and friends. They have been very supportive of us through the good and bad times.”
Zubin, who signed off from a highly-successful meet with two individual and relay gold medals each, added, “I think everyone ran really well today, the win was unexpected.”
