Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, April 14, 2014 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) completed an unbeaten run in the second round of the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship with a 46–17 win over Yishun Town Secondary (YTS). Charmaine Koh (SCGS #13) led all scorers with 14 points, while Lai Mei Zhen (YTS #10) paced her team with six points.
Both teams had already qualified for the semi-final prior to this game. SCGS will progress with a flawless 3–0 win–loss record, while Yishun Town qualified with a 2–1 record.
SCGS came out strong in the first quarter, playing solid basketball on both ends of the court. Their defence prevented Yishun Town from getting into the paint. They also forced turnovers, giving them a huge advantage in terms of possession. Charmaine Koh (SCGS #13) was hot in the quarter, contributing nine points to her team’s cause.
The second quarter was more of the same story. SCGS’s defence clamped down even further, holding Yishun Town to just three points in the quarter. All of Yishun Town’s points came from free throws, no baskets were made from open play.
The second half saw SCGS put in their reserves to close out the game. They were more than able to take on Yishun Town’s starters, outperforming them on the court. Low Yi Xuan (SCGS #11) did particularly well on defence, shutting down her opponent in each possession. SCGS eventually came away with the 46–17 win.
SCGS captain, Rachel Mok (#6), said, “It feels good to qualify, but we are all nervous for the semi-finals. We don’t have a preference as to who we want to play. We will find out who our opponents are and prepare for the respective matches. I just want us to play our best and stay calm.”
