Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Tuesday, April 15, 2014 — Leroi Lee of Anglo-Chinese Junior College clinched the boys’ A Division 3000m steeplechase gold medal with a timing of 10 minutes 54.73 seconds at the 55th National Inter-School Track & Field Championships.

Tan Yu Chuan of Hwa Chong Institution bagged the silver medal with a timing of 10:57.47, while Tang Chung Theng of Victoria Junior College finished third in 10:58.11.

This is Leroi’s first A Division 3000m steeplechase event at the National Championships. The ACJC student commented, “It feels good because it is unexpected. I want to thank my coach, although he is very strict. He helped me a lot with my training. I also want to thank my teammates. I lost a lot of motivation to run this year. My teammates are the ones who have been encouraging me all these while.”

The A Division 3000m steeplechase hand-timed record of 9:38.3 was set by M. Maran, then of Jurong Vocational Institute, in 1990. Victoria Junior College alumnus Narayan Paudel set the electronically-timed record of 9:57.25 eleven years later.

Leroi’s winning time is the slowest in at least 34 years in this event at the Schools’ Championships. The previous slowest winning time of 10:46.3 was set in 1983 by Wilson Raj Perumal.
